My 40 Most-Recommended iPhone and iPad Apps

  1. Reeder – requires Google Reader. After Twitter, this is my most-used app.
  2. Instapaper – very good on the iPad. To make the most of it, setup an account with www.ifttt.com.
  3. How to Cook Everything – useful enough.
  4. Words HD Free – fun, syncs easily with Facebook.
  5. Find iPhone – I use this very often!
  6. Hulu Plus – costs money, but better than Netflix.
  7. Skype – useful.
  8. Downcast – great for streaming podcasts.
  9. Draw with Friends – you know its fun.
  10. Dropbox – enough said.
  11. Yelp – my favorite reviewing website.
  12. Temple Run – I’ll admit it, I am addicted.
  13. Mint.com – great for tracking spending.
  14. Kindle – I’ve bought more than 50 books.
  15. Spotify – I like music again because of this.
  16. OnLiveDesktop – a complete Windows desktop suite. For free.
  17. WordPress – well designed UI for WordPress blogs.
  18. JotNot – scanner app, works amazingly well.
  19. Cleartune – tune in instrument accurately and quickly.
  20. GoodReader – access Google Docs files and manage them on your iPad.
  21. Evernote – great for everything from short notes to essay brainstorming (and essays)
  22. Pages, Numbers, Keynote – I’m continually amazed how well these are designed.
  23. iAnnotate PDF – import, export and manage PDF files.
  24. WolframAlpha – try it for everything from checking camps to comparing phylogenetic relationships among species.
  25. Twitter – not bad for a proprietary app.
  26. Mario Cooks – Mario Batali’s really nice cooking app.
  27. Zite – I’m surprised by how great the content this app curates is.
  28. Khan Academy – rich content that’s to-the-point and on-access.
  29. The Economist – favorite news source, requires subscription
  30. The NY Times – second favorite news source, requires subscription
  31. Flixster – awesome for finding out movie times
  32. GymGoal+ – put together and track weight lifting exercises.
  33. Instagram – easy to use, so you will use it a lot.
  34. Facebook – I use this app more than I care to admit.
  35. eWallet – keep track of passwords, works well and good UI
  36. TWC – the weather channel app, works well
  37. Sleep Cycle – tracking your sleep can be addictive.
  38. Clear – my favorite to-do list app, and I’ve tried a lot!
  39. Action Movie – try it at least once – fun mash-up movies you make in a minute.
  40. Photosynth – takes panoramic photos, great UI
